Summary

The world of K-Pop has never met a star like this。 Debut author Lyla Lee delivers a deliciously fun, thoughtful rom-com celebrating confidence and body positivity—perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Julie Murphy。

Skye Shin has heard it all。 Fat girls shouldn’t dance。 Wear bright colors。 Shouldn’t call attention to themselves。 But Skye dreams of joining the glittering world of K-Pop, and to do that, she’s about to break all the rules that society, the media, and even her own mother, have set for girls like her。

She’ll challenge thousands of other performers in an internationally televised competition looking for the next K-pop star, and she’ll do it better than anyone else。

When Skye nails her audition, she’s immediately swept into a whirlwind of countless practices, shocking performances, and the drama that comes with reality TV。 What she doesn’t count on are the highly fat-phobic beauty standards of the Korean pop entertainment industry, her sudden media fame and scrutiny, or the sparks that soon fly with her fellow competitor, Henry Cho。

But Skye has her sights on becoming the world’s first plus-sized K-pop star, and that means winning the competition—without losing herself。

Literally stop, this book was so freaking cute, I loved every minute of it!! Sky is just such a lovable character, and I actually got to see a YA novel with healthy friendships??? Thank you Lyla Lee。Anyway, not only is this book just super fun and adorable, but it also covers important topics of self love, homophobia, fatphobia, and even racsim。 I think the only thing I wasn't totally feeling all the time was the writing style。 It felt kinda choppy sometimes, it might have been the narrator, but Literally stop, this book was so freaking cute, I loved every minute of it!! This book was so darn cute!! Trigger warnings for fatphobia and toxic relationship with a parent。 I can totally see this being a super cute Netflix movie。 If you are into Kdrama or Kpop you will 100000000% love this! I loved how this show dealt with the body image and how it can effect someone。 I also found myself relating a lot because I grew up a dancer and my entire life I was told I was too big for the costumes。 I was told by several of the dance moms that I shouldn't have been cast in certa This book was so darn cute!! Recommendation: Read this in print, don't listen to the audio。The story of the ups and downs of a heavy, body positive teen who enters a singing and dancing competition show。 This story provides a window into the experiences of 2nd generation Korean Americans 。。。。。。I switched from audio to reading the print version because the narrator puts inflections on the wrong words and sounds almost like text to speech。 She also gives unfortunate voices to all the female teens in the story, making it seem Recommendation: Read this in print, don't listen to the audio。The story of the ups and downs of a heavy, body positive teen who enters a singing and dancing competition show。 This story provides a window into the experiences of 2nd generation Korean Americans 。。。。。。I switched from audio to reading the print version because the narrator puts inflections on the wrong words and sounds almost like text to speech。 She also gives unfortunate voices to all the female teens in the story, making it seem like the main character had a problem with women。 。。。more

Hard to read at times due to the fatphobia and bullying that the main character faces, but ultimately a powerful feel-good read。

More like 3。5 stars。 This book addresses so many issues , it was kinda hard to focus。 Additionally, as it progressed towards the end I felt that it was very predictable。 I will say the author makes a noble attempt at trying to explain certain aspects of Korean culture, i。e KPOP, food and spas。 I do think that YA readers will enjoy this。

I think the underlining message Lee presents in her book is we need to make body positivity the norm。 When we look at bodies, our initial thoughts should be: this is a human being。 They have feelings, emotions, and abilities that should be recognized and celebrated。 The idea of being kind should not be a difficult one。My take away after reading I’ll Be The One is Lee’s book is going to change someone’s life。 As an author she is edifying body positivity。 Inspiring young people to love their bodie I think the underlining message Lee presents in her book is we need to make body positivity the norm。 When we look at bodies, our initial thoughts should be: this is a human being。 They have feelings, emotions, and abilities that should be recognized and celebrated。 The idea of being kind should not be a difficult one。My take away after reading I’ll Be The One is Lee’s book is going to change someone’s life。 As an author she is edifying body positivity。 Inspiring young people to love their bodies。 Where they, and we, can challenge and change social norms, demanding to be seen, acknowledged, and respected。 You can find my full review on my book blog:https://sheafandink。com/2021/04/14/il。。。 。。。more

I guess, because it has such amazing rep for Korean people, plus sized people, and LGBTQ+ people, and that’s so important and lacking in books。All in all, it was still a bit of a let down, and my rating is only as high as it is because of the representation。 。。。more

No character growth for Skye, I guess。The message and representation in this book were really good, but some things didn't make it the best for me。The first one was the writing。 I felt like everything was being told to me rather than showed。 It really seemed like a big montage where the plot was happening before my eyes instead of me feeling in the moment with the characters。The second thing, I think, also goes with the writing。 It is how preachy the novel was。 There was no subtle character mom No character growth for Skye, I guess。The message and representation in this book were really good, but some things didn't make it the best for me。The first one was the writing。 I felt like everything was being told to me rather than showed。 It really seemed like a big montage where the plot was happening before my eyes instead of me feeling in the moment with the characters。The second thing, I think, also goes with the writing。 It is how preachy the novel was。 There was no subtle character moment, or development, for that matter。 The main character was always confident and right in everything she did or said。 The author really took all the opportunities to tell us how good Skye felt in her own skin ( which I am not saying isn't good), is just that by the 10th time it felt repetitive and pointless to have a whole book where the mc doesn't go through any growth。 That is just a me-thing, though。 I am sure it means a lot to girls in that age group that are going through body image struggles to find a character like Skye in literature。 。。。more

Super cute。 Discussions about mental abuse, family trauma and fatphobia really interesting to learn more about how Korea and the K-pop world does see those who are fat and the impact that can have on people growing up。 How damaging it can be。 Dislikes: The romantic relationship- it felt like my dude Henry really jumped into things very fast。 Granted his previous relationship was mainly for 'publicity' but it still felt wrong to me。 They hardly knew each other but I also get they are 16 and things are different when you're a teen。 The writing style。 I don't know what it was but I couldn't connect with it。 It was a personal preference as I like a lot of description and flowery writing so I couldn't get as into the story as I could have。 Generally this story and plot felt a little young for me so a personal preference understanding that these characters are 16 and I'm an adult so a little disconnect。 。。。more
